SOCIAL CLIMB

I bought Getting More on a Sunday and read the first few pages that night. On Monday I found myself reflecting on the many times I had unwittingly used the tools just by being nice to somebody or valuing them.

If I had been capable of implementing these invisible strategies without even realizing it before, just think what I could accomplish now that I had the book as an aide.

STRAIGHTER JACKET

Last year I bought a jacket at Brooks Brothers. At $600 it was the most expensive jacket I had ever purchased but I thought it would last me ten years and that I would wear it all the time.

Unfortunately, it never fit right. I’m a size 39/40, but all they had in the store that day was a size 41. The salesman assured me that, with some minor adjustments, it would fit perfectly. It never did.

KEEPING COOL

My supposedly top-of-the-line refrigerator died one weekend. My husband called the manufacturer to see if they would cover the costs of the repair since the machine was so new (just over a year old). They told us their newer items were under a one-year rather than a five-year warranty. Despite the expired warranty, they offered [...]

Upscale Upset

My mother in law recently decided to treat my entire extended family, all 9 of us, to an upscale dinner in our hometown of Jacksonville, FL. She trusted me to pick the restaurant and I happily chose one of my most favorite local haunts. It was a place I had dined frequently and, although it [...]

Layover Lesson

On a recent business trip to meet with a potential new client, I had a layover in Atlanta. I was slightly perturbed when my connecting flight in Atlanta ended up being delayed several hours due to mechanical problems. Needing a diversion, I wandered into the bookstore across from my gate and, while browsing, picked up [...]

Disney Dilemma

I was recently in Orlando, Florida on business. I’m a big fan of Disney and my client was a short drive away from the park. I decided to stay in one of the Disney hotels so I could eat dinner on the Disney Boardwalk and walk around a bit. By dinner time there were only 2.5 hours until the EPCOT theme park closed for the day. I wanted to eat inside without having to buy a whole day’s admission.

Ask And You Shall Receive

Right after reading Getting More, I immediately saved $40. The book paid for itself in less than 24 hours. Here’s what I did: I had an appointment with my physical therapist. The day of my appointment , I ended up having to cancel last minute. Like many doctor’s offices, mine had a stringent policy stating [...]

HONEYMOON MONSOON

I was on my honeymoon in Bora Bora. We were staying at the exquisite St. Regis Resort (the resort where the movie, Couples Retreat, was filmed). So we were understandably disappointed when it started pouring rain our first day there. To make matters worse, the roof of our over-water bungalow started leaking from the torrential [...]

Negotiating With The Police

I was rushing home from work around 8:00 PM one summer night. The commute from my house to the office is 80 miles each way. Halfway through my trip a State Trooper pulled me over. I was definitely speeding. I thought, “Wow, I’m in hot water. I must’ve been doing at least 100 mph.” As the trooper walked towards my car I tried to collect my thoughts.
