BOOKSTORE SCORE

I noticed the book Getting More on our marketing coach’s desk. I knew he was going out of town for two days so I convinced him to let me borrow it. After devouring just a few pages, it was clear that I would need my own copy. However, I’m from the Philippines so the book [...]

STRAIGHTER JACKET

Last year I bought a jacket at Brooks Brothers. At $600 it was the most expensive jacket I had ever purchased but I thought it would last me ten years and that I would wear it all the time.

Unfortunately, it never fit right. I’m a size 39/40, but all they had in the store that day was a size 41. The salesman assured me that, with some minor adjustments, it would fit perfectly. It never did.

KEEPING COOL

My supposedly top-of-the-line refrigerator died one weekend. My husband called the manufacturer to see if they would cover the costs of the repair since the machine was so new (just over a year old). They told us their newer items were under a one-year rather than a five-year warranty. Despite the expired warranty, they offered [...]

Upscale Upset

My mother in law recently decided to treat my entire extended family, all 9 of us, to an upscale dinner in our hometown of Jacksonville, FL. She trusted me to pick the restaurant and I happily chose one of my most favorite local haunts. It was a place I had dined frequently and, although it [...]

Compensation For Bad Trip

On a recent trip with my fiancée, everything imaginable went awry with our airline: Two of our flights were cancelled due to mechanical failures. When we had to stay overnight to wait for another flight, the airline put us up in an uncomfortable motel. You’d think that in light of these setbacks, the airline employees [...]

Five Easy Pieces, Revisited

SD Comment: Jack Nicholson got standards down just right, but he lost it in the end due to too much emotion. I had one graduate student who couldn’t get a Virgin Mary at bar, or a Bloody Mary except with mix. So she ordered a tomato juice. She then asked for a side order of [...]

The Right Stuff

A recruiter contacted me and asked me to fly from Philadelphia to L.A. for an interview 36 hours later. The interviewer was in L.A. from China on a business trip. Due to the short time frame, I immediately went online and purchased a non-refundable ticket on US Airways for $1,500, three times more than most domestic flights I take.

Answer That Survey

The Verizon internet wasn’t working both on my phone and at my house. I called up Verizon. Before I was transferred to customer service, their automated system asked if I would like to take a customer service survey after the call. I said yes, and I’m glad I did because I ended up spending 59 minutes and 49 seconds on the phone with three different “customer service reps” (and I use that term loosely), without result.

Bread Line

I went to Whole Foods to pick up challah bread for Rosh Hashana. I had ordered one in advance. But when I got there I found that they gave away my order.

Flower Bouquet

Players: Cesar Medina and Chantelle, a service rep from 1-800-flowers. Cesar: I placed an order for flowers yesterday at 9:05 AM for same day delivery. The flowers were delivered at 7 PM, so my girlfriend did not get her surprise on the day that mattered. Can I be compensated for this? Chantelle: Our guaranteed delivery [...]
